Birth of Punk exhibition
Another exhibition about 1970's New York punk movement started in New York city.
Street photographer Godlis, and PUNK Magazine's John Holmstrom are contributing to the show, and they just sent us reports of the exhibit.
The Birth of Punk exhibition is held at the gallery in South Street Seaport in the New York City, which John describes "is the first art exhibition that I know of that highlights why and how the “Punk Movement” started in New York City and the many artists and musicians contributed to it".
As in the photos below, the exhibit features many photos by Godlis, which is also used on the poster of exhibit. On the wall is the timeline of NY punk movement with many "scribbling, drawing and hand-lettering" by John all over the place.
It looks like an ordinarily white wall but closer look and you see through a lot of print materials randomly pasted on, as seen in downtown New York City back in 1970's.
Both Godlis and John were at the opening on May 19th which was filled with visitors. It may have been too crowded, Godlis said "I end up talking to so many people, I hardly have time to shoot - ha!"
John also sent us a review of the show, and here is an excerpt:
"It’s not a huge “art installment,” just a nice, small, and very visual exhibition that’s dense with content with some amazing photographs and a lot of text proving the idea that “PUNK” started in New York City and nowhere else. This is the closest thing to a new issue of PUNK Magazine: It covers the stuff that inspired me to start PUNK magazine back in the early 1970s."
The exhibit will be up until end of July. Hit the link below for more info:
